New Movies To Watch This Dec 2016
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Dec 16th)
As a huge Star Wars fan, this one's a no-brainer for me. I am beyond excited to watch this first non-episodic Star Wars movie, which will mark the return of Darth Vader to the big screen and explain just what happened right before "Episode IV: A New Hope." All the footage I've seen so far has made "Rogue One" look promising and stunning. Also, there's some speculation that Felicity Jones' leading character has some connection to Rey, the protagonist of "Episode VII: The Force Awakens." Cannot wait!
La La Land (Dec 16th)
"Rogue One" already has me booked for December 16th, but "La La Land," opening on the very same day, has definitely also caught my attention. This is a musical written and directed by Damien Chazelle, the same guy behind the fantastic "Whiplash." The film is a love story between Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, and also a love letter to the city of Los Angeles.
Nocturnal Animals (Dec 18th in select theaters)
Competition is tough this December, but there is certainly room for fashion designer Tom Ford's latest effort as a film director. If you forgot how incredible his first movie "A Single Man" was, the trailer for "Nocturnal Animals" will definitely remind you of his directing chops. Amy Adams plays the lead character in a cast that also includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Shannon, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
Passengers (Dec 21st)
The other sci-fi blockbuster premiering this December has a cast with both of the current American Sweethearts, Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence. I didn't know exactly what to expect from this movie before, while only bits and pieces of news were released, but the trailers have gotten me very, very, very excited about its potential. Pratt made "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Jurassic World" happen, while JLaw made "Hunger Games" and the latest "X-Men" trilogy huge successes. I can already smell the beginning yet another franchise...
Silence (Dec 23rd)
And yes, even Martin Scorsese will have a movie out this December, just in time for the 2017 Oscars. Not just any movie, but a movie that took 26 years and a few lawsuits to be made. "Silence" is about two Portuguese missionaries that are persecuted in 17th century Japan. The cast includes Andrew Garfield, Adam Driver, and Liam Neeson. Due to the quiet legal complications it faced, the release date was only confirmed a couple of months ago, in September.
